Rick · 读书会

Describe a person who makes plans a lot and is good at planning.

Today I'd like to talk about one of my best friends, Rick, who is really good at planning. I know this because we once organized a reading group together, and at first I had no idea where to start. Rick helped me see the whole picture. He said we needed to finish three things in one month: choose a topic, invite people, and decide the time and place. First, we went on Google Scholar to look for newly published essays and choose a topic students might be interested in. Then we made a poster, put it up in the student center, and shared it on social media. After that, he made an online survey so everyone could vote for their available time. Because of him, the reading group went smoothly. He taught me that a good plan can make a difficult task much easier.

Today I'd like to talk about one of my best friends, Rick, who is really good at planning. I noticed this when we had to organize a reading group together. At first, I was completely lost, because I had never done this kind of activity before. Rick did not rush into details. He first helped me see the whole picture. He said that since we still had one month left, we should finish three big tasks: choose a topic, invite people, and decide the time and place. For the topic, we went on Google Scholar and looked at some newly published essays, because he wanted to find something fresh and interesting. After that, we made a poster, put it up in the student center, and also shared the information on social media. Then he made an online survey so everyone could vote for their available time. He even reminded us a few days before the meeting. In the end, the reading group went smoothly. I learned from him that a good plan is not complicated. It just breaks a big task into clear and practical steps.

Jennifer ·

Describe a person who often helps others.

I'd like to talk about Jennifer, a postdoc teacher I met during my exchange semester. At that time, I was applying for a postgraduate program, and I needed to submit a writing sample. The problem was that no teacher at my own university worked on the topic I was interested in, so I felt helpless and did not know who could give me useful feedback. Then I went to Jennifer's office hour. She spent a long time talking with me, read my writing sample carefully, and gave me practical suggestions. She also let me audit one of her classes and treated me almost like a regular student. That really moved me. It was the first time I felt a strong sense of belonging in an academic community. Because of her, I also want to help younger students when they feel lost in the future.

The problem was that no teacher at my own university worked on the topic I was interested in, so I felt helpless. I did not know who could read my draft or give me useful academic advice. Then I went to Jennifer's office hour. She spent a long time talking with me, listened to my situation patiently, and read my writing sample very carefully. She did not just say it was good or bad. She gave me practical suggestions about structure, argument and reading direction. Later, she also let me audit one of her classes, so I could learn more about the field and meet people with similar interests. She treated me almost like a regular student. Because of her, I felt a strong sense of belonging in an academic community. Her kindness also made me want to help younger students in the future.

Rick ·

Describe a person who solved a problem in a smart way.

I want to talk about my friend Rick, because he once solved a problem in a very smart way when we were organizing a reading group. We had already chosen the topic and prepared the reading materials, but when we started to promote the event, the school suddenly told us that we could not put posters everywhere on campus. I was quite nervous, because I did not know how to let more students know about the event. Rick stayed calm and suggested a better solution. He said we could post the information on social media, send out invitations by email, and ask our classmates to share the link. Later, when the classroom was not available, he also suggested turning it into an online meeting. I think he was smart because he did not complain. He quickly found another way and kept the plan moving.

I want to talk about my friend Rick, because he once solved a problem in a very smart way when we were organizing a reading group. At the beginning, everything seemed fine. We had chosen the topic, prepared the reading materials, and printed some posters. However, when we tried to put the posters up on campus, the school staff stopped us and said posters were not allowed there anymore because they could make the campus messy. I was quite nervous, because I did not know how to let more students know about the event. Rick stayed calm and immediately changed the plan. He suggested that we should move the promotion online. We posted the information on social media, sent invitations by email, and asked our classmates to share the link. Later, we faced another problem: the classroom we wanted was not available. Again, Rick did not complain. He suggested turning the reading group into an online meeting and sending the meeting link to everyone in advance. I think he was smart because he did not waste time being upset. He quickly found another workable solution and kept the whole plan moving.

Describe a person who is good at learning and speaking new languages.

I'd like to talk about a friend who is really good at learning Korean. What I admire most is that he learns the language through daily life, not just from textbooks. For listening, he often listens to K-pop and Korean podcasts when he is walking or doing simple things. He also watches Korean dramas and recites some interesting dialogues, so he can learn common expressions naturally. For reading, he sets the language of his phone to Korean, follows Korean social media accounts, and reads newspapers, magazines, and sometimes even academic articles. For writing, he writes short diary entries in Korean and puts sticky notes on objects around his room. For speaking, he tries to find conversation partners online or talk to Korean international students when possible. I think he is good at languages because he turns learning into a part of his everyday life.

I'd like to talk about a friend from high school who is really good at learning Korean. What I admire most is that he does not treat language learning as a boring school task. He turns it into part of his daily life. For listening, he often listens to K-pop and Korean podcasts when he is walking or doing simple things. He also watches Korean dramas and recites some interesting dialogues, so he can pick up common expressions naturally. For reading, he sets the language of his phone to Korean, follows Korean social media accounts, and reads newspapers, magazines and sometimes even academic articles. For writing, he keeps a short diary in Korean. He also writes Korean words on sticky notes and puts them on objects around his room, so he sees the words every day. For speaking, he tries to find conversation partners online, and when he meets Korean international students, he is brave enough to start a conversation. Once he even wrote a short Korean poem and read it to us. I think he is good at languages because he creates an environment where the language is always around him.

Describe a friend from your childhood.

I'd like to talk about a childhood friend I first met in kindergarten. At first, we were not very close. But one day, my mother took me to a dance class after school, and I suddenly saw a familiar face. It was her. I was shy and did not know how to start a conversation, but after class she came to me and asked if I wanted to get ice cream with her. After that, we became best friends. We learned dancing together, and later we also learned the same musical instrument. Sometimes after class, I went to her home to play. Later, we went to different middle schools, so we slowly lost touch. A few days ago, she sent me a video of our childhood dance performance. It reminded me of those happy and worry-free times, and even though we haven't met for years, I still feel close to her.

I'd like to talk about a childhood friend I first met in kindergarten. At first, we were only classmates and we were not very close, because I was quite shy and did not usually start conversations. But one day, my mother took me to an after-school dance class, and I suddenly saw a familiar face in the room. It was her. I was surprised and happy, but I still felt too shy to say anything. After class, she came to me first and asked whether I wanted to get ice cream with her. That small invitation changed everything. After that, we became best friends. We learned dancing together, and later we also learned the same musical instrument. Sometimes after class, I went to her home to play, so we spent a lot of time together. Later, we went to different middle schools, and because our schools were far away from each other, we slowly lost touch. We only interacted occasionally on social media. A few days ago, she suddenly sent me a video of our childhood dance performance. It reminded me of those happy and worry-free times, and I still felt close to her.
