Do you wear a watch?
I have a watch that was a gift from my boyfriend, but I rarely wear it because I am worried that I might break it.
Why do you think some people buy expensive watches?
Some people are collectors, so they appreciate the beauty and collectible value of delicate watches. Wealthy people may also see an expensive watch as a representation of their social status.
Do you think people will still wear watches in the future?
Yes. I think electronic watches will become more popular because they have many convenient functions. People can answer calls, locate their devices, and check health data with them.
What is a website that you use very often?
Recently, I have often used academic websites such as Google Scholar because I am preparing a writing sample for my postgraduate application. I download many academic papers from these websites.
Would you like to build your own website?
Yes, I would. I would like to create a personal website with my CV and an introduction to myself. I also enjoy browsing philosophers' websites, so building my own would be interesting.
Do you think you spend too much time online?
Definitely. I spend about eight to ten hours online each day. Some of that time is unnecessary entertainment, but I also need to communicate with friends, parents and teachers, submit homework, shop and order food online.
Did you like going to parks when you were a kid?
Not really. I was quite shy, and there were always a lot of children in parks. The crowded and noisy environment made me nervous, so I did not enjoy going there.
Would you like to see more parks in your city?
Yes, definitely. I live in Beijing, which is a busy commercial city with many tall buildings. More parks could make the city more vibrant and more suitable for living.
Describe a person who makes plans a lot and is good at planning.
Today I would like to talk about one of my university friends, Rick, who is very good at planning.
I realized this when our teacher asked us to organize a reading group. I felt nervous and helpless because I had never organized this kind of activity before. Rick stayed calm and explained that we needed to complete three main tasks within one month: choose a topic, promote the reading group and book a classroom.
First, we searched websites such as Google Scholar for recently published papers. Rick then created an online survey so that students could vote for the topics they were interested in. After choosing the topic, we printed posters and put them up in the student center. We also shared links on social media to promote the event online. Finally, Rick booked a classroom in advance that was large enough to accommodate the audience.
I think Rick is good at planning because he can see the whole picture and break a complicated activity into doable steps. His plan made the whole task feel much easier.
Do you think it is important to plan ahead?
Yes, I think it is very important. Valuable opportunities do not always wait for us, so we need to prepare in advance. By planning ahead, we can collect enough information and gain the qualifications we need to take an opportunity when it appears.
Do you think children should plan their future careers?
I think they should make some plans because a career goal can give them a sense of direction and help them understand what they need to do. However, detailed long-term planning is becoming more difficult because the job market changes very fast, and we do not know which jobs will still exist in ten years.
Is making study plans popular among young people?
Yes, I think it is popular. On social media, I often see videos about study plans and the tools or apps people use to organize their studies. This may reflect young people's anxiety because making a plan can give them a sense of control and reduce some of their stress.
What kind of activities do we need to plan ahead?
Activities that involve many people usually need to be planned in advance. Organizers must find and book a place that can accommodate everyone. They also need to coordinate the participants' available times, perhaps by using an online survey, so that as many people as possible can join.
