Are you a student or do you work?

I am currently a student, and I major in philosophy at university.

Where are you from?

I am from Qinghai. It is far away from Beijing, and it has stunning natural landscapes.

What do you like the most about your city?

What I like most is the landscape. There are many mountains and large areas of grassland, and the sky is very blue. The air there is also very fresh.

Do you plan to live there in the future?

Not really. It is hard for young people to find good jobs there, and apart from the landscape, there are not many entertainment activities.

Did you like history when you were young?

Not really. We had history classes in high school, but I found them boring because we had to remember a lot of times, names and places.

When was the last time you read about history?

The last time was last month. I read about a writer's historical background because I study philosophy, and it helped me understand his thoughts better.

Describe a computer program or app that you use very often.

I would like to talk about an app on my phone that I use quite often. It is a second-hand online shopping app called Xianyu, and it is very popular in China. I found out about it from several sources. Many of my friends recommended it to me, and I also saw a lot of posts about it on social media, so I decided to try it. I usually scroll through it on a weekly basis when I have spare time, but I only buy things from it when I really need something. For example, one time I bought a pair of yellow rain boots from Xianyu when I was preparing for a music festival. The weather forecast said it would rain, and if I bought them from an ordinary online shopping app like Taobao, it would take three to four days to arrive. I did not have enough time to wait, so I decided to buy them from Xianyu instead. Overall, I think it is a useful app because it helps people buy second-hand things more conveniently, especially when they need something quickly or want to save money.

What kind of apps are popular in your country?

I think apps related to daily life are very popular in my country, such as online shopping apps and social media apps. For example, people use WeChat, TikTok and other social media platforms because they have a lot of stress in daily life. When they scroll through social media, they can relax and forget their troubles for a while.

Do you think parents should limit their children's use of computer programs and cell phone apps? Why, and how?

Yes, I think parents should limit their children's use of apps because many children are too young to control themselves. Even adults sometimes find it hard to control their use of addictive apps. Parents can make a deal with their children, such as allowing them to use the phone for one hour after they finish their homework. They can also limit unsuitable content on their children's phones.

Do you think young people are more and more reliant on these programs and apps nowadays?

Yes, definitely. One reason is that social media is a convenient way for young people to relieve stress. Another reason is that people now need to rely on their phones for work or study. For example, leaders may send information or assign tasks through WeChat or work apps, and students also share information through their phones. If someone does not use these apps, they may lose a sense of belonging.

Do you think the government should regulate computer programs and apps? How should they do it?

Yes, I think the government should regulate apps, especially illegal apps or harmful information on apps. For example, some apps may pretend to be games but contain content that is bad for children or even adults. However, regulation should not be too extreme, because people may lose their freedom. The government can make laws about app use, listen to public advice before carrying out those laws, and set up departments to check app content.

What kind of neighborhood do you live in? Is it a quiet or noisy neighborhood?

It is kind of noisy because there are many children living around me. Sometimes I can be interrupted by parents shouting at their children, so it can be a little stressful.

Do you know of any famous people who live in your neighborhood?

There are not many famous people in my neighborhood. But if I have to say one, I know there is a famous English teacher living next to me. He used to work at New Oriental, and now he has started his own business.

Do you know your neighbors personally?

Not really. I have only met many of my neighbors several times in the elevator. Most of the time, we just say hello to each other and do not have long conversations.

Are there many people keeping pets in your country?

Yes, I think more and more people are keeping pets in my country, especially small and quiet pets like cats. Many people live in apartments, so they may not have enough space for big animals or animals that need a lot of room, like dogs.

Have you ever had a pet before?

Yes, I used to have many pets. I had two rabbits when I was a child, and I also have a cat in my hometown. Now my parents take care of it. I also have another cat where I live now.

Do you prefer to keep more pets in your future?

I really want to, because I often watch videos of cute pets on social media. But I am not sure whether I will keep more pets, because I do not have a permanent place to live right now. I think it may not be responsible to keep many pets at this stage.

Do you like taking pictures of different kinds of views?

Yes, I really like taking pictures. I used to live in a province with many stunning landscapes, so it was natural for me to appreciate beautiful scenery. My parents also like taking photos, and they gave me their camera, so I gradually developed this habit.

Do you prefer views in urban areas or rural areas?

I can appreciate both of them. In urban areas, I like beautiful buildings because I can see human creativity and originality in them. I also enjoy natural landscapes in rural areas because they make me feel refreshed and relaxed.

Talk about a long-term goal or ambition you would like to achieve.

I would like to talk about a long-term goal that I want to achieve in the future, which is to become a philosopher. I have had this goal since high school. At that time, I did not really understand what it meant to be a philosopher, but I found that I really liked asking why questions. I wanted to understand the basic rules of the universe and think about deeper questions. Because of this interest, I decided to study philosophy at university. Right now, I major in philosophy, write a lot of papers and take many courses related to this subject. However, I know that becoming a philosopher is not just about being smart. It requires serious academic training. For example, if I want to teach philosophy at university in the future, I need to have strong academic qualifications, and I probably need to pursue a PhD degree. So right now, I am preparing my application for a postgraduate program. I also need to read a lot of papers and reconstruct the arguments in them. This goal is important to me because philosophy is an area that I am genuinely interested in, and it gives me a clear direction for my future study and career.

Do you think it is important for children to have goals or ambitions?

Yes, definitely. I think it is important because if children do not have a goal, they may waste a lot of time. A goal is like a purpose or a destination. If they have a goal, they know where they need to go and how to prepare themselves. Also, when opportunities appear, they are more likely to be ready for them.

What are the pros and cons to be ambitious?

Being ambitious has advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage is that it gives people a sense of direction, so they know what they need to do. However, if people are too ambitious or set a goal that is unrealistic according to their ability, they may feel anxious or nervous. If they work very hard but still cannot achieve the goal, they may feel upset.

Is it necessary to be ambitious when working in a team in a company?

I do not think everyone in a team has to be ambitious. A team needs different kinds of people. It is important to have ambitious people because they can set a goal and help the team work towards it. But a team also needs people who focus on the present work and complete tasks step by step.

Are people in your country more ambitious nowadays compared to the past?

I think people may be less ambitious than in the past, because many people now have too much stress and responsibility. Many of them just want to live a peaceful life and deal with the problems they have to face. After that, they may want to relax, spend time with family and friends, or pursue their hobbies. For them, being ambitious can become a burden or a source of stress.
